Dwelling on a Dwelling

when you came knocking

there was no for lease sign on my front door

I had no vacancy

yet in you barged

a suitcase under each arm

and so I made a home

I let you stake a claim in my heart

sent out invitations

for a welcome party

little did I know

you brought empty cardboard boxes

and filled them

with the parts of me

I loved

suddenly there were cracks in our façade

bad enough

that you left in the night

those boxes

packed in the back of a moving van

you held the prime real estate

now I bar the windows

deadbolt my doors

I won't ever

let the hurt in again
