when people start to feel like homes

with winding wooden staircases

and plants on each windowsill

that is when I know that I've begun to love

some people are townhouses

shoulder-to-shoulder, supported by another

a cheesy doormat to welcome you

some are cabins in the woods

a rocking chair on the porch

a gas-stove, a fireplace smouldering

he is an apartment

tiny, cramped and full

of knick-knacks, tokens, photos capturing memories

it is my favourite of all

it keeps me humble

knowing that all I ever need

is a hand to hold

on the worn-out sofa

of that shitty brick flat

in whichever city we end up in
