when I look at her

I see whiskers, paws, sharp teeth

I am not a girl in a red riding coat

but she is

a lioness

in the wild

we walk down to the watering hole

when my legs start to tire

she carries me

my neck between her teeth

In the zoo

Even the pride gets hungry

His mane set like a crown above his brow

But she never lets him take a bite

Instead she growls and extends her claw

When I look at her, now fully-grown

She watches back

A lioness who

In the reflection of the watering hole

Has the eyes of my mother
